Asphalt Estimate Calculator: Free Online Asphalt Estimate Calculator
Use our free asphalt estimate calculator to build a complete paving estimate in one pass: area, volume, tonnage, and material cost. It's built for contractors putting together bids and homeowners scoping a driveway job, turning your dimensions and local price per ton into a ready-to-use estimate.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter length and width. Input the dimensions of the area to be paved, in feet.
- Set the thickness. Enter the compacted asphalt depth in inches — typically 2–3 inches for driveways, 4–6 inches for parking lots.
- Enter your price per ton. Use your local plant's quoted price, or the default of $85/ton as a placeholder.
- Review the full breakdown. The calculator returns area, volume, weight, and material cost together.
- Layer in labor and base costs. This is a material estimate; add labor, equipment, and base preparation to build a complete bid.
How do you calculate complete asphalt project estimates?
The calculator works from your area down to a dollar figure in four linked steps: area, then volume, then weight, then cost.
Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Volume (cu yd) = (Length × Width × Depth (in) ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Weight (tons) = Volume (cu yd) × 1.95
Material Cost ($) = Weight (tons) × Price per Ton ($)
Where:
- Length & Width: The dimensions of the paved area, in feet.
- Depth: The compacted thickness of the asphalt layer, in inches.
- 1.95: The approximate tons per cubic yard of compacted hot mix asphalt (based on ~145 lb/ft³ density).
- Price per ton: The delivered asphalt price from your local plant or supplier.
Example calculation.
Scenario: A 50 ft × 20 ft area paved 4 inches thick, with asphalt priced at $85 per ton.
- Calculate area: 50 × 20 = 1,000 sq ft
- Calculate volume: (1,000 × 4 ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = 333.3 ÷ 27 = 12.35 cu yd
- Calculate weight: 12.35 × 1.95 = 24.07 tons
- Calculate material cost: 24.07 × $85 = $2,046
Result: This job needs about24.1 tons of hot mix asphalt, roughly$2,046 in material cost before labor and base prep.
Tips from the field.
- This is a materials-only estimate. A complete bid also needs labor ($1–$3 per sq ft), equipment mobilization, and base preparation ($1–$2 per sq ft).
- Thickness drives cost more than most people expect.Going from 3 to 4 inches increases material volume — and cost — by roughly a third.
- Get at least three written estimates when comparing contractors, and confirm specified thickness and base depth match between quotes.
- Order 5–10% extra material to cover compaction variance, irregular edges, and spillage during placement.
- Watch the season. Asphalt plants in northern climates often shut down in winter, and pricing tends to be best in early spring or late fall.
- Larger jobs pencil out cheaper per square foot.Mobilization, equipment setup, and paver time are largely fixed costs, so bigger paving jobs spread them over more area.
Because area, volume, weight, and cost are chained together in this formula, small changes to your inputs compound quickly. Doubling the thickness doubles both the volume and the material cost; doubling the length or width does the same. Run a few "what if" scenarios with different depths and dimensions before locking in a bid.

Frequently asked questions.
How do I estimate an asphalt paving job?
Step 1: Measure area (Length × Width). Step 2: Calculate volume (Area × Depth ÷ 27 for cu yd). Step 3: Convert to tons (Volume × 1.95 for standard asphalt). Step 4: Multiply by price per ton from local plant. Step 5: Add labor ($1-$3 per sq ft), equipment ($500-$2,000/day), and base preparation ($1-$2 per sq ft). A 1,000 sq ft driveway at 4 inches: ~25 tons asphalt × $85/ton = $2,125 + labor & base = $5,000-$7,000 total.
How much does asphalt paving cost per square foot?
Asphalt paving costs $2 to $5 per square foot installed for residential driveways. Commercial parking lots cost $3 to $7 per sq ft. Costs vary by region, asphalt thickness, base preparation needs, and accessibility. Use our estimate calculator above: enter your dimensions and local pricing for an accurate estimate.
What factors affect asphalt paving costs the most?
The biggest cost drivers are: area size (larger jobs have lower per-sq-ft costs), asphalt thickness (4 inches costs 33% more than 3 inches), base preparation (poor soil needs more gravel), accessibility (tight spaces need hand work), distance from the asphalt plant, and oil prices (asphalt is petroleum-based). Seasonal demand also impacts pricing.
How do I estimate asphalt for a commercial parking lot?
Measure total area including parking stalls, aisles, and access roads. For a 100-car lot: approximately 35,000-40,000 sq ft. At 5 inches thick: 40,000 × 5 ÷ 12 ÷ 27 = 617 cubic yards × 1.95 = 1,203 tons. At $85/ton: ~$102,000 for materials alone. Add 15-20% for striping, signs, and curbing.
Should I get multiple asphalt paving estimates?
Yes: get at least 3 written estimates from licensed, insured contractors. Compare: price per ton, specified asphalt thickness, base preparation included, warranty terms (typically 1-2 years), and timeline. Be wary of estimates that are significantly lower: they may cut corners on thickness or base preparation, leading to premature failure.
When is the best time to pave asphalt?
Spring through early fall when ground temperatures are above 50°F and rising. Asphalt cools quickly after placement: cold weather makes proper compaction difficult. Most contractors are busiest May-September. Booking in early spring or late fall may get better pricing but weather delays are more likely. Asphalt plants typically shut down in winter in northern states.
