Asphalt Cost Calculator: Estimate your Paving Project Budget

Use our free asphalt cost calculator to estimate the total material cost for any paving project. Built for contractors quoting jobs and homeowners budgeting a driveway, it turns your project dimensions and a local price per ton into an instant material cost estimate, along with the volume and weight behind that number.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Enter your dimensions. Input the length, width, and depth (thickness) of the area to be paved.
  2. Set your price per ton. Enter the local asphalt price (default $100/ton). Hot mix asphalt typically runs $80–$150 per ton depending on location, mix type, and order size.
  3. Review the volume and weight. The calculator first works out cubic yards, then converts that to tons using standard asphalt density.
  4. Check the estimated cost. Material cost is the weight in tons multiplied by your price per ton.
  5. Add your own markup. This figure is material cost only — layer in labor, equipment, and base preparation separately for a full bid.

How do you calculate asphalt paving cost?

The calculator finds volume from your dimensions, converts it to tons using a standard asphalt density of 145 lb/ft³, then multiplies by your price per ton.

Volume (cu yd) = (Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12) ÷ 27

Weight (tons) = (Volume (cu yd) × 145 lb/ft³ × 27) ÷ 2,000

Cost ($) = Weight (tons) × Price per Ton ($)

Where:

  • Length & Width: The dimensions of the area to be paved, in feet.
  • Depth: The compacted thickness of the asphalt layer, in inches.
  • 145 lb/ft³: The standard density of hot mix asphalt used to convert volume to weight.
  • Price per ton: The delivered price your local plant or supplier quotes for hot mix asphalt.

Example calculation.

Scenario: A 50 ft × 20 ft driveway with 3 inches of asphalt, priced at $100 per ton.

  1. Calculate volume: (50 × 20 × 3 ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = 250 ÷ 27 = 9.26 cu yd
  2. Calculate weight: (9.26 × 145 × 27) ÷ 2,000 = 36,249 ÷ 2,000 = 18.12 tons
  3. Calculate cost: 18.12 × $100 = $1,812

Result: This driveway needs about18.1 tons of hot mix asphalt, costing roughly$1,812 in material before labor and base prep.

Tips from the field.

  • Material cost is only part of the bid. Labor, equipment mobilization, and base preparation typically add another $1–$3 per sq ft on top of material cost.
  • Bulk orders lower the price per ton. Plants often discount pricing for orders of 10 tons or more, so combining jobs can save money.
  • Get current pricing before quoting. Asphalt is petroleum-based, so prices shift with oil markets and can change month to month.
  • Build in a waste allowance. Add 5–10% to your material estimate to cover compaction loss, spillage, and irregular edges.
  • Compare per-ton and per-sq-ft pricing. Some suppliers quote by the ton, others by the square foot installed — convert both to the same basis before comparing bids.
  • Thickness changes cost more than you'd expect.Because weight scales directly with depth, going from 2 to 3 inches raises material cost by 50%, even though the footprint didn't change.

Keep in mind this figure covers material only. On a typical driveway job, material usually makes up 40–60% of the total invoice, with the rest split between labor, equipment, and base preparation — so use this number as one input to a full quote, not the finished bid itself.

Frequently asked questions.

How much does asphalt paving cost per square foot?

Asphalt paving costs $2 to $5 per square foot on average for residential driveways in the US. This includes 2-3 inches of hot mix asphalt over a gravel base. A standard 600 sq ft driveway costs $1,200-$3,000. Use our calculator above for your specific dimensions and local pricing.

How much does an asphalt driveway cost?

A new asphalt driveway costs $3,000 to $7,000 on average for a two-car driveway (400-600 sq ft). This includes excavation, 4-6 inches of gravel base, and 3 inches of asphalt. Larger driveways, sloped lots, or premium finishes can push costs to $10,000+.

How much is asphalt per ton?

Hot mix asphalt costs $80 to $150 per ton depending on location, asphalt mix type, and quantity ordered. Bulk orders (10+ tons) get lower per-ton pricing. One ton covers approximately 80 sq ft at 3 inches thick, so a typical driveway needs 5-8 tons.

Asphalt vs concrete driveway cost: which is cheaper?

Asphalt driveways cost $2-$5 per sq ft vs concrete at $4-$8 per sq ft installed. Asphalt is cheaper upfront but requires sealcoating every 3-5 years ($0.15-$0.25 per sq ft). Concrete lasts 30-40 years vs asphalt's 15-20 years. For short-term savings, choose asphalt; for long-term value, choose concrete.

How much does it cost to repave a driveway?

Repaving an existing driveway costs $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot for an overlay (2 inches of new asphalt over the old surface). A full tear-out and replacement costs $3 to $7 per sq ft. If your existing base is solid, an overlay can save 40-50% compared to a full replacement.
