Asphalt Driveway Calculator: Free Online Driveway Paving Estimator
Use our free asphalt driveway calculator to estimate exactly how much asphalt you need for a residential driveway paving project. Whether you are replacing an old gravel driveway, resurfacing an existing asphalt surface, or paving a brand-new driveway, this calculator gives you the tonnage and cubic yardage you need to order materials and get accurate quotes from paving contractors. Enter your driveway length, width, and desired asphalt thickness to get instant results.
How to use this calculator.
- Select your unit system. Choose imperial (feet, inches) or metric (meters, centimeters) using the toggle above. Most US residential driveways are measured in feet.
- Enter your driveway dimensions. Input the length and width of your driveway. For curved or irregular driveways, measure the widest and longest points and add 5% to your total for the irregular shape, or break the driveway into rectangular sections and sum the areas.
- Set the asphalt thickness. Standard residential driveways use 3 inches of hot mix asphalt. If your driveway will see heavy vehicles (RVs, work trucks, boats), increase to 4 inches.
- Adjust the density if needed. The default of 145 lb/ft³ is correct for standard hot mix asphalt. If your contractor specifies a different mix design, adjust accordingly.
- Review and order. The calculator shows your driveway area (sq ft), asphalt volume (cubic yards), and weight (tons). Use the tonnage figure when calling asphalt suppliers for quotes.
How do you calculate asphalt needed for driveway paving?
Asphalt driveway estimation is straightforward geometry applied to residential-scale projects. The formula is:
Driveway Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Asphalt Volume (cu yd) = Area (sq ft) × Thickness (in) ÷ 324
Asphalt Weight (tons) = Volume (cu yd) × Density (lb/ft³) × 27 ÷ 2,000
Where:
- Length: The total length of the driveway from street to garage or parking area, in feet or meters.
- Width: The width of the driveway. A single-car driveway is typically 10-12 ft wide; a two-car driveway is 18-24 ft wide.
- Thickness: The compacted thickness. Residential standard is 2.5-3 inches for cars only, 4 inches for occasional heavy vehicles.
- Density: 145 lb/ft³ for standard hot mix asphalt (HMA). This yields approximately 1.95 tons per compacted cubic yard.
Example calculation.
Let's estimate the asphalt for a typical two-car residential driveway.
Scenario: You are paving a driveway that is 24 ft long from the street to the garage, 20 ft wide to accommodate two cars, with 3 inches of standard hot mix asphalt.
- Calculate driveway area: 24 ft × 20 ft = 480 sq ft
- Calculate asphalt volume: 480 × 3 ÷ 324 = 4.44 cu yd
- Calculate asphalt weight: 4.44 × 1.95 = 8.66 tons
- Add 10% waste factor: 8.66 × 1.10 = 9.53 tons
Result: You need approximately 9.5 tonsof hot mix asphalt for this 480 sq ft driveway. At an average price of $110 per ton, the material cost is approximately $1,050, plus labor and base preparation.
For a longer driveway: A 50 ft × 12 ft single-car driveway (600 sq ft) with 3 inches of asphalt requires approximately 10.8 tons (with 10% waste factor).
Tips from the field.
- Minimum 3 inches for cars, 4 inches for trucks.Passenger vehicles exert roughly 30-50 psi on pavement. A 2.5-inch asphalt layer over a properly compacted base handles this easily. But if you park a loaded pickup, RV, or boat trailer, step up to 4 inches. The extra inch costs about $1.50 per square foot more and doubles the load-bearing capacity.
- Do not skimp on the base. The 4-6 inches of compacted crushed stone under your asphalt is what actually carries the load. A poor base fails regardless of asphalt thickness. Compact the base to 95% Standard Proctor density in 4-inch lifts.
- Slope away from the house. Your driveway should slope at least 1% (1/8 inch per foot) away from the foundation. For a 24-foot driveway, that is a 3-inch drop from garage to street. Water pooling against the foundation causes basement leaks and frost heave damage.
- Wait before sealing. New asphalt needs 6-12 months to fully cure before the first sealcoat application. Sealing too early traps oils and solvents, preventing proper curing and leaving a soft, vulnerable surface. After that, sealcoat every 2-3 years.
- Schedule paving for warm weather. Hot mix asphalt arrives at 275-300°F and must be compacted before it cools below 185°F. In cool weather (below 50°F ambient), the asphalt cools too fast for proper compaction. Late spring through early fall is ideal in most regions.

Frequently asked questions.
How much asphalt do I need for a driveway?
For a typical two-car driveway (24 ft × 20 ft = 480 sq ft) with 3 inches of asphalt, you need approximately 8.7 tons of hot mix asphalt including a 10% waste factor. A larger driveway (50 ft × 20 ft = 1,000 sq ft) with 4 inches of asphalt requires about 25.4 tons. Use our calculator above with your exact dimensions for a precise estimate.
How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
Residential asphalt driveways should be 2.5-3 inches thick after compaction for passenger vehicles only. For driveways that will see occasional heavy vehicles (RVs, trucks), use 4 inches. A 2-inch binder course topped with a 1-1.5 inch wearing course is standard for new construction. The aggregate base beneath should be 4-8 inches of compacted crushed stone.
What does an asphalt driveway cost?
Asphalt driveway installation costs $3-$7 per square foot on average, including materials, labor, grading, and base preparation. A standard 480 sq ft two-car driveway costs $1,440-$3,360 total. Material costs alone are $80-$150 per ton for hot mix asphalt. Resurfacing an existing driveway (overlay) costs $2-$5 per square foot. Prices vary by region, accessibility, and project complexity.
How long should I wait before driving on a new asphalt driveway?
Wait at least 24-48 hours before driving on new asphalt for light vehicles. For heavy vehicles, wait 5-7 days. The asphalt continues to cure and harden for 6-12 months. During this curing period, avoid sharp turns (steering wheel turned while stationary), parking in the same spot repeatedly, and using kickstands or jack stands. In hot weather, fresh asphalt can soften: use plywood under jack stands.
Can I pave my own asphalt driveway?
DIY asphalt driveway paving is not recommended for most homeowners. It requires specialized equipment (paver, roller, dump truck), a crew of 4-6 people, and asphalt that stays workable for only 2-4 hours after delivery. Proper grading, base compaction, and achieving consistent thickness require experience. Hiring a professional paving contractor typically costs $3-$7 per square foot and includes a warranty.
How often should I sealcoat my asphalt driveway?
Sealcoat your asphalt driveway every 2-3 years to protect against UV damage, water penetration, and oil/gas spills. Wait at least 6-12 months after new asphalt installation before the first sealcoat application. Sealcoating costs $0.15-$0.25 per square foot for DIY or $0.50-$1.00 per square foot for professional application. Sealcoating extends driveway life by 5-10 years when done regularly.
What's the best time of year to pave an asphalt driveway?
Late spring through early fall (May-October in most US regions) is the best time for asphalt paving. Asphalt requires ambient temperatures above 50°F and ground temperatures above 45°F for proper compaction. Hot mix asphalt arrives at 275-300°F and must be compacted before it cools below 185°F. Paving in cold weather results in poor compaction and premature failure. Summer is ideal because longer days and warmer temperatures provide the best working conditions.
