Asphalt Tonnage Calculator: Free Online Asphalt Tonnage Estimator
Use our free asphalt tonnage calculator to determine exactly how many tons of asphalt you need directly from your area and thickness measurements. Designed for contractors, estimators, and paving professionals who order asphalt by the ton, this tool bypasses intermediate volume calculations and gives you the tonnage figure you actually need to place your order. Enter your paving area and thickness to get instant tonnage results for hot mix, warm mix, or cold mix asphalt.
How to use this calculator.
- Select your unit system. Choose imperial (square feet, inches, pounds per cubic foot) or metric (square meters, centimeters, kilograms per cubic meter) using the toggle above.
- Enter the paving area. Input the total square footage (or square meters) of the area to be paved. If you do not know your area, multiply length by width first, or use ourpavement calculatorwhich accepts length and width separately.
- Set the asphalt thickness. Enter the compacted thickness in inches (or centimeters). Standard driveways use 3 inches; parking lots use 4-6 inches.
- Adjust the density if needed. The default is 145 lb/ft³ for standard hot mix asphalt. Adjust for warm mix (140 lb/ft³) or cold mix (135 lb/ft³) based on your supplier's mix design.
- Review your tonnage result. The calculator displays volume in cubic yards and weight in tons. Order directly from your supplier using the tonnage figure, adding 5-10% for waste.
How do you calculate asphalt tonnage from area and thickness?
Asphalt tonnage is calculated by converting area and thickness to volume, then applying the material density. The core formula is:
Volume (cu yd) = Area (sq ft) × Thickness (in) ÷ 324
Tonnage (tons) = Volume (cu yd) × Density (lb/ft³) × 27 ÷ 2,000
Where:
- Area: The total surface area to be paved, in square feet or square meters.
- Thickness: The compacted depth of the asphalt layer, in inches or centimeters.
- Density: The compacted density of the asphalt mix. Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is 145 lb/ft³ (2,322 kg/m³). Warm mix asphalt (WMA) is approximately 140 lb/ft³ (2,242 kg/m³). Cold mix is approximately 135 lb/ft³ (2,162 kg/m³).
- 324: Conversion factor (12 inches per foot × 27 cubic feet per cubic yard) to go directly from sq ft and inches to cubic yards.
- 27: Cubic feet in one cubic yard (3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft).
- 2,000: Pounds in one US short ton.
Quick reference: At 4 inches thick with standard hot mix (145 lb/ft³), every 1,000 square feet of paving area requires approximately 24.1 tons of asphalt. At 3 inches thick, the same area requires about 18.1 tons.
Example calculation.
Let's calculate the tonnage for a parking area.
Scenario: You are paving a parking area that is 2,500 sq ft with 4 inches of hot mix asphalt at standard density (145 lb/ft³).
- Calculate volume in cubic yards: 2,500 × 4 ÷ 324 = 30.86 cu yd
- Calculate weight in tons: 30.86 × 145 × 27 ÷ 2,000 = 60.2 tons
- Alternative quick method: 30.86 cu yd × 1.95 tons/cu yd = 60.2 tons
- Add 5% waste factor: 60.2 × 1.05 = 63.2 tons
Result: You need approximately 63.5 tonsof hot mix asphalt for this 2,500 sq ft parking area.
Metric equivalent: A 232 m² area with 10 cm of asphalt at 2,322 kg/m³ density requires approximately 57.7 tonnes (plus waste factor).
Tips from the field.
- Always order by weight, not volume. Asphalt is sold by the ton because weight is consistent regardless of compaction. Volume changes as the asphalt cools and compacts. When you call your supplier, tell them the tonnage, not the cubic yards.
- Confirm density with your supplier. Mix designs vary. Stone matrix asphalt (SMA) and polymer-modified mixes can be denser than standard HMA. A quick call to confirm the actual density of your supplier's mix can prevent a 5% over- or under-order.
- Add 5-10% for waste on every job. Cut edges, spillage during placement, uneven subgrade, and compaction variance all consume material. A 10,000 sq ft lot at 4 inches needs about 240 tons. Ordering 252-264 tons (5-10% extra) is standard practice and far cheaper than a second delivery.
- Use the right thickness for the job. Residential driveways need 3 inches minimum. Light parking areas need 3-4 inches. Commercial lots need 4-6 inches. Over-thickening wastes money; under-thickening causes premature failure. Ourasphalt thickness calculatorcan help you determine the correct depth.
- Know your truck capacities. A standard dump truck carries 20-25 tons of asphalt. If your job requires 63 tons, you will need three trucks. Coordinate delivery timing with your paving crew: asphalt must be placed while above 185°F.

Frequently asked questions.
How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?
Multiply the area (square feet) by the thickness (in feet) to get cubic feet, divide by 27 to get cubic yards, then multiply by 1.95 (tons per cubic yard at 145 lb/ft³ density). The formula is: Tons = (Area × Thickness in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27 × (Density × 27 ÷ 2000). For standard hot mix asphalt at 4 inches thick: every 1,000 sq ft = approximately 24.1 tons.
How many tons of asphalt per square foot?
At 1 inch thickness, each square foot of asphalt weighs approximately 12.1 pounds, or about 0.006 tons. At standard driveway thickness (3-4 inches), each square foot weighs 36-48 pounds (0.018-0.024 tons). For a quick estimate: multiply your square footage by 0.024 for a 4-inch pavement to get the tons needed. Divide by 2,000 to convert pounds to tons.
How many tons of asphalt are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard of compacted hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 1.95 tons (3,915 pounds) at 145 lb/ft³ density. Warm mix asphalt weighs about 1.89 tons per cubic yard (140 lb/ft³). Cold mix weighs about 1.82 tons per cubic yard (135 lb/ft³). The exact weight depends on mix design, aggregate type, and compaction level.
How many tons of asphalt do I need for a parking lot?
For a 10,000 sq ft parking lot with 4 inches of asphalt: 10,000 × (4÷12) = 3,333 cu ft ÷ 27 = 123.5 cu yd × 1.95 = 241 tons. With 5% waste factor: 253 tons. For 6-inch thickness: 370 tons with waste. Commercial parking lots typically require 4-6 inches of asphalt depending on expected traffic. Use our calculator above for your exact dimensions.
What's the difference between asphalt tonnage and volume?
Volume (cubic yards) measures space occupied regardless of material. Tonnage measures weight. Asphalt tonnage = volume × density. Since asphalt suppliers sell by the ton (weight), not by the cubic yard (volume), you must convert from volume to weight for ordering. Different asphalt mixes have different densities, which changes the tonnage for the same volume.
How accurate is the asphalt tonnage estimate?
This calculator provides estimates within ±5% of actual requirements when using accurate dimensions and the correct density for your mix design. Actual tonnage may vary due to subgrade unevenness, compaction variation, and job site waste. Always order 5-10% extra to account for these variables. Confirm the density with your asphalt supplier for the most accurate estimate.
