Asphalt Volume Calculator: Free Online Asphalt Quantity Estimator
Use our free asphalt volume calculator to determine exactly how much asphalt you need in cubic feet and cubic yards, including a waste factor for accurate ordering. Designed for paving contractors, estimators, and project managers, this tool converts your project dimensions into precise material volumes. Enter your length, width, depth, and waste percentage to get instant, reliable results.
How to use this calculator.
- Measure the paved area. Measure the length and width of the area to be paved in feet. For irregular areas, divide into rectangles and calculate each section separately.
- Enter the asphalt depth. Residential driveways use 2.5-3 inches. Commercial parking lots use 4-6 inches. Roads may require 6-12 inches in multiple lifts.
- Set the waste factor. A 5-10% waste factor is standard. Use 10-15% for irregular shapes, tight spaces, or projects with many edges and corners.
- Review your results. The calculator displays volume in cubic feet, cubic yards, and cubic yards with waste included. Asphalt is typically ordered by the ton, so you will need to convert cubic yards to tons (1 cu yd of hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 2.0-2.5 tons).
How do you calculate asphalt volume with waste factor?
Asphalt volume is calculated from rectangular dimensions, then the waste factor is applied for ordering purposes.
Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27
Volume with Waste (cu yd) = Volume (cu yd) × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)
Where:
- Hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 145-155 lb/ft³ compacted, or about 2.0-2.5 tons per cubic yard depending on mix design.
- Waste factor accounts for material lost during transport, placement, and compaction at edges.
- Multiple lifts are used for deep pavement sections. Calculate each lift separately if depths vary.
Example calculation.
Let's calculate the asphalt volume for a commercial parking lot.
Scenario: You are paving a parking lot that is 100 ft long and 80 ft wide with 5 inches of asphalt and a 10% waste factor.
- Calculate cubic feet: 100 ft × 80 ft × 5 in ÷ 12 = 3,333.3 cu ft
- Convert to cubic yards: 3,333.3 cu ft ÷ 27 = 123.46 cu yd
- Apply waste factor: 123.46 cu yd × 1.10 = 135.80 cu yd
Result: You need approximately 136 cubic yardsof asphalt for this parking lot. At 2.2 tons per cubic yard, that is about 299 tons of hot mix asphalt. Order in full truckloads (typically 20-25 tons each).
Tips from the field.
- Compact to spec. Asphalt must be compacted to 92-96% of maximum theoretical density. Uncompacted loose asphalt is about 25-30% thicker than the final compacted thickness. Order based on compacted volume.
- Coordinate truck deliveries. Hot mix asphalt cools quickly and must be placed within 2-4 hours of leaving the plant. Plan your truck schedule so the paver never stops waiting for material.
- Use a tack coat. Apply tack coat between lifts and at edges of existing pavement. It bonds the new asphalt to the old surface and prevents delamination at the joint.
- Account for the paver width. Standard paver screeds are 8-12 ft wide. Plan your paving lanes to minimize longitudinal joints, which are the weakest part of the pavement.

Frequently asked questions.
How much waste should I account for when ordering asphalt?
A waste factor of 5% to 10% is standard for most asphalt paving projects. Irregular areas, odd shapes, or projects with many edges may require up to 15% waste. It is always better to have slightly too much material than to run short mid-project.
What is the difference between cubic feet and cubic yards of asphalt?
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Asphalt is typically ordered by the ton, but volume calculations start in cubic feet (length × width × depth in feet) and are converted to cubic yards (÷ 27) for ordering purposes. Our calculator handles both units.
How thick should asphalt be for a parking lot vs a driveway?
Residential driveways typically use 2.5 to 3 inches of asphalt. Commercial parking lots require 4 to 6 inches depending on traffic. Roads and highways range from 6 to 12 inches, often in multiple lifts for proper compaction.
How do I calculate asphalt volume in cubic yards?
Formula: (Length in feet × Width in feet × Depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. For a 50 ft × 20 ft area at 4 inches: (50 × 20 × 0.333) ÷ 27 = 333.3 ÷ 27 = 12.35 cubic yards. To convert to tons, multiply by 1.95 (standard hot mix asphalt density). Our calculator does this automatically.
How many tons of asphalt per cubic yard?
One cubic yard of compacted hot mix asphalt weighs approximately 3,900-4,000 lbs, or about 1.95-2.0 tons. Cold mix asphalt is lighter at about 1.7-1.8 tons per cubic yard. To convert: cubic yards × 1.95 = tons of hot mix asphalt needed.
