Pavement Cost Calculator: Free Online Pavement Cost Calculator
Use our free pavement cost calculator to get a fast ballpark estimate for a paving project before you request contractor quotes. Enter the dimensions of the area and a cost per square foot for your material of choice, and the calculator returns the total area and the estimated project cost. It's built for comparing asphalt, concrete, and gravel pricing side by side.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter your dimensions. Input the length and width of the area to be paved, in feet.
- Enter a cost per square foot. Use a regional average or a number pulled from a recent quote. Typical installed costs run $3-$7/sq ft for asphalt, $6-$15/sq ft for concrete, and $1-$3/sq ft for gravel.
- Review your results. The calculator displays total area and estimated total cost instantly.
- Compare materials. Re-run the calculator with a different cost-per-square-foot figure to compare asphalt, concrete, and gravel side by side for the same footprint.
- Get real quotes. Use the result as a planning baseline, then collect at least three contractor bids before committing to a budget.
How do you calculate pavement project costs by surface type?
Total cost is simply the paved area multiplied by your price per square foot. The area is calculated the same way as any rectangular surface: length times width.
Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
Estimated Total Cost ($) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Cost per Sq Ft ($/sq ft)
Where:
- Length & Width: The dimensions of the area to be paved, in feet.
- Cost per Sq Ft: The all-in installed price for your chosen material, including base prep and labor. This figure varies significantly by region and by material.
Example calculation.
Let's price out a small asphalt driveway extension.
Scenario: You're paving a 40 ft × 20 ft area and your local contractor quotes $6 per sq ft installed for asphalt.
- Calculate the area: 40 ft × 20 ft = 800 sq ft
- Multiply by the cost per square foot: 800 sq ft × $6/sq ft = $4,800
Result: The estimated total cost is$4,800 for this driveway extension.
Tips from the field.
- Get 3+ quotes. A per-square-foot estimate is a starting point, not a bid. Actual pricing depends on site access, base condition, and local labor rates.
- Larger jobs cost less per square foot. Mobilization, equipment, and setup costs are largely fixed, so per-unit pricing drops as project size increases.
- Factor in lifetime cost, not just install price.Asphalt is cheaper upfront but typically needs sealcoating every 2-3 years; concrete costs more initially but needs little maintenance over a 25-40 year life.
- Base prep is often excluded from a bare per-square-foot number. Confirm whether excavation, grading, and base material are included in a quoted price before comparing bids.
- Budget separately for drainage and edging. Curbs, catch basins, and grading to shed water are common add-ons that aren't captured in a simple area-times-price estimate.

Frequently asked questions.
How much does pavement cost per square foot?
Asphalt: $3-$7 per sq ft installed. Concrete: $6-$15 per sq ft. Gravel: $1-$3 per sq ft. Pavers: $10-$30 per sq ft. Prices include base preparation, materials, and labor. Regional variation is significant. Ongoing maintenance costs should also be considered: asphalt needs sealcoating every 2-3 years; concrete needs minimal maintenance.
How do I use this calculator?
Enter your project dimensions in the input fields above and the results update automatically. For the most accurate results, measure carefully and use consistent units (feet for length/width, inches for depth). Add 5-10% extra for waste and variations.
How is pavement cost estimated?
Cost = (area × thickness ÷ 27) × cost per cubic yard + base prep + labor. Asphalt: $3-$7/sq ft. Concrete: $6-$12/sq ft. Always get 3+ contractor quotes. Per-unit costs decrease for larger projects (economies of scale).
Asphalt vs concrete paving costs?
Asphalt: $3-$7 per sq ft installed, lasts 15-25 years with maintenance. Concrete: $6-$12 per sq ft installed, lasts 25-40 years. Asphalt is cheaper upfront but needs sealcoating every 3-5 years. Concrete costs more initially but has lower lifetime maintenance.
