Concrete Cost Calculator: Estimate your Concrete Project Budget
Use this concrete cost calculator to estimate the total price of ready-mix concrete for a slab, patio, footing, or wall. It's built for homeowners getting quotes and contractors putting together a fast budget number. Enter your pour dimensions and a local price per cubic yard, and it returns the concrete volume and total estimated cost.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter length and width. Measure the footprint of the slab or area in feet.
- Enter thickness. Standard slabs run 4 inches; driveways and areas carrying vehicle loads typically use 5-6 inches.
- Set your price per cubic yard. The default is $150, but call two or three local ready-mix suppliers for a current quote: prices vary by region and PSI strength.
- Review the estimate. The calculator shows volume in cubic yards and the total estimated material cost instantly.
- Add a contingency. Build in 5-10% for waste, over-excavation, or a short load fee before finalizing your budget.
How do you calculate concrete costs?
The calculator converts your slab dimensions into cubic yards, then multiplies by your local price per yard.
Volume (cu yd) = (Length × Width × Thickness ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Cost = Volume × Price Per Cubic Yard
Where:
- Length & Width: Slab footprint, in feet.
- Thickness: Slab depth in inches, divided by 12 to convert to feet before the volume calculation.
- Price Per Cubic Yard: Delivered ready-mix price, typically $125-$175/yd³ for standard mixes.
Example calculation.
Scenario: You're pouring a 30 ft × 20 ft patio slab, 4 inches thick, and your local supplier quotes $150 per cubic yard delivered.
- Convert thickness to feet: 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
- Calculate cubic feet: 30 ft × 20 ft × 0.333 ft = 200 cu ft
- Convert to cubic yards: 200 ÷ 27 = 7.41 cu yd
- Calculate cost: 7.41 cu yd × $150 = $1,111
Result: This patio needs about7.41 cubic yards of concrete, costing roughly$1,111 before waste, delivery surcharges, or labor.
Tips from the field.
- Watch for short-load fees. Orders under 5 cubic yards often carry a $50-$100 surcharge per load: it may be cheaper to round your order up than to pay it.
- Material is only part of the bill. Labor, forming, rebar or wire mesh, a gravel base, and finishing typically double the total installed cost beyond the raw material price.
- Higher PSI costs more. Standard 3,000-3,500 PSI mix is cheapest; 4,000+ PSI mixes for driveways or foundations cost $10-$25 more per yard.
- Order 5-10% extra. Uneven subgrade, formwork overage, and spillage consistently eat into your calculated volume.
- Get quotes in writing. Prices swing seasonally and by delivery distance from the batch plant, so lock in a quote before pour day.
- Pump trucks add cost but save labor. If the mixer truck can't reach the pour location directly, a concrete pump adds $500-$1,000+ to the job but saves hours of wheelbarrowing on large or hard-to-access pours.
Keep in mind that this calculator prices the raw material only. A full installed cost also includes site prep (excavation, gravel base compaction), formwork, reinforcement, finishing labor, and any decorative treatments like stamping or exposed aggregate. For a rough installed budget, multiply the material cost estimate by 2.5-4x to account for these additional line items on a typical residential job.

Frequently asked questions.
How much does concrete cost per yard?
Ready-mix concrete costs $125 to $175 per cubic yard on average in the US, including delivery. Short loads (less than 5 yards) may incur a $50-$100 small load fee. High-strength mixes (4,000+ PSI) cost $150-$200 per yard. Use our calculator to estimate your total concrete cost.
How much does concrete cost per square foot?
Concrete costs $4 to $8 per square foot installed for a standard 4-inch slab, including materials ($1.50-$2.50/sq ft for concrete) and labor ($2.50-$5.50/sq ft). Stamped or decorative concrete costs $8-$18 per sq ft. A 400 sq ft patio costs $1,600-$3,200 on average.
How do I calculate concrete cost for a project?
Calculate the volume in cubic yards: (length × width × thickness in inches) ÷ 324. Multiply by the price per cubic yard delivered. Add 10% for waste. For a 30×20 ft slab at 4 inches: 7.4 cu yd × $150/yd × 1.10 = $1,221. Use our calculator above for instant estimates.
How much does a concrete driveway cost?
A concrete driveway costs $4,000 to $12,000 for a two-car driveway (600 sq ft), or $6-$12 per sq ft installed. This includes 4-inch thick concrete with rebar or wire mesh reinforcement, gravel base, and finishing. Stamped concrete driveways cost $12-$18 per sq ft.
What affects concrete pricing the most?
The biggest factors are: concrete strength (PSI rating: higher costs more), delivery distance from the batch plant, order size (small loads have premium charges), admixtures (accelerators, retarders, fiber reinforcement), and accessibility (pump vs. direct pour). Concrete prices also vary seasonally, with higher prices in peak construction months.
How much does a yard of concrete cover?
One cubic yard of concrete covers 81 square feet at 4 inches thick, 65 square feet at 5 inches, or 54 square feet at 6 inches. Formula: coverage (sq ft) = 324 ÷ thickness (in inches). For example, at 4 inches thick: 324 ÷ 4 = 81 sq ft per cubic yard.
