Pavement Area Calculator: Free Online Pavement Area Calculator

Use our free pavement area calculator to find the surface area of a driveway, parking lot, or road before you order materials or price out a job. Enter the length and width of the paved surface and the calculator returns the area in square feet, square yards, and acres: the three units most bids, material orders, and permit forms ask for.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Measure the length. Enter the longest dimension of the paved surface in feet.
  2. Measure the width. Enter the shorter dimension in feet. For a driveway, this is usually the drive lane width; for a parking lot, measure the full paved footprint.
  3. Break up irregular shapes first. If the surface isn't a simple rectangle, split it into rectangles, triangles, and circles, calculate each section separately, then add the totals together before entering a combined length and width, or run each section through the calculator individually.
  4. Review your results. The calculator instantly displays area in square feet, square yards, and acres.

How do you calculate pavement surface area?

Area is length multiplied by width. The calculator then converts that square-footage figure into square yards and acres for you, since material suppliers and land-area documents often use different units.

Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Area (sq yd) = Area (sq ft) ÷ 9

Area (acres) = Area (sq ft) ÷ 43,560

Where:

  • Length: The longest dimension of the paved surface, in feet.
  • Width: The shorter dimension, in feet.
  • 9: The number of square feet in one square yard (3 ft × 3 ft), used to convert to the unit most asphalt and concrete suppliers quote by.
  • 43,560: The number of square feet in one acre, used for larger lots and road segments.

Example calculation.

Let's calculate the area of a small commercial parking area.

Scenario: You're paving a lot that measures 60 ft long by 30 ft wide.

  1. Calculate square footage: 60 ft × 30 ft = 1,800 sq ft
  2. Convert to square yards: 1,800 sq ft ÷ 9 = 200 sq yd
  3. Convert to acres: 1,800 sq ft ÷ 43,560 = 0.041 acres

Result: The lot covers 1,800 sq ft(200 sq yd, or roughly 0.04 acres).

Tips from the field.

  • Break curves into segments. For curved driveway edges or radiused parking lot corners, approximate the curve with several short straight segments and sum the resulting shapes for a close estimate.
  • Standard parking spaces run 9 ft × 18 ft. That's 162 sq ft per space, plus drive aisles typically 12-14 ft wide for one-way traffic and 20-24 ft for two-way traffic. Use this to sanity-check a lot layout against its total area.
  • Add 5-10% for waste on irregular shapes. Odd angles, curved edges, and obstructions around drains or islands eat into material efficiency more than a clean rectangle.
  • Measure road area by centerline length and average width. For a stretch of road with a varying cross-section, measure the centerline and multiply by the average paved width rather than trying to trace every edge.
  • Confirm the paved footprint on site, not on a drawing.Site plans and as-built conditions can differ; a quick tape measurement before ordering material catches surprises early.

Frequently asked questions.

How do I calculate pavement area?

For rectangular areas: Length × Width. For circular areas: π × (Diameter/2)². For irregular areas: break into rectangles, triangles, and circles, calculate each separately, then sum. For roads with curves, measure the centerline length and average width. Pavement area is always measured in square feet or square meters at the surface.

How do I use this calculator?

Enter your project dimensions in the input fields above and the results update automatically. For the most accurate results, measure carefully and use consistent units (feet for length/width, inches for depth). Add 5-10% extra for waste and variations.

How do I calculate pavement area for irregular shapes?

Break the area into rectangles, triangles (base × height ÷ 2), and circles (π × r²). Sum the areas. For curved edges, approximate with short straight segments. Add 5-10% for waste on irregular shapes.

What is the typical size of a parking space?

Standard parking space: 9 ft × 18 ft (162 sq ft). Compact: 8 ft × 16 ft. ADA accessible: 8 ft + 5 ft access aisle × 18 ft. One-way aisles: 12-14 ft wide. Two-way aisles: 20-24 ft wide. Use our calculator to estimate total lot area.
