Area Converter
The area converter provides instant conversions between all common area units used in construction, real estate, and land measurement. Enter a value in square feet and see the equivalent in square yards, square meters, acres, and hectares simultaneously. Ideal for comparing property sizes, calculating material coverage, and converting between imperial and metric area measurements.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter your value. Type the area you want to convert into the input field, in square feet.
- Read the converted results. Square yards, square meters, acres, and hectares update instantly side by side.
- Cross-check against your source. Compare the result to a listing, plan, or contract that uses a different unit.
- Use the value you need. Take whichever converted figure matches the unit your supplier, engineer, or local authority requires.
How do you calculate area conversions?
Area conversion multiplies your entered value by a fixed factor for each target unit. Because area is a two-dimensional measurement, converting between units based on length, like feet and meters, requires squaring the linear conversion factor rather than applying it directly.
Square Yards = Value ÷ 9
Square Meters = Value × 0.092903
Acres = Value ÷ 43,560
Hectares = Value ÷ 107,639
Where:
- Value: Your starting measurement, entered in square feet.
- 9: The number of square feet in one square yard (3 ft × 3 ft).
- 0.092903: The squared conversion factor between feet and meters (0.3048²), used to convert square feet to square meters.
- 43,560: The number of square feet in one acre.
- 107,639: The number of square feet in one hectare (10,000 m²).
Example calculation.
Convert 2,500 square feet into square meters, square yards, acres, and hectares.
- Square feet to square meters: 2,500 × 0.092903 = 232.26 sq m
- Square feet to square yards: 2,500 ÷ 9 = 277.78 sq yd
- Square feet to acres: 2,500 ÷ 43,560 = 0.0574 acres
- Square feet to hectares: 2,500 ÷ 107,639 = 0.0232 ha
Result: 2,500 sq ft equals approximately 232.26 sq m, 277.78 sq yd, 0.0574 acres, or 0.0232 hectares.
Tips from the field.
- Square the linear factor, do not just multiply by it.A common mistake is multiplying by 0.3048 to convert square feet to square meters instead of 0.092903. The correct factor is the square of the linear conversion.
- Roofing squares are 100 sq ft each. In roofing, materials are sold by the "square" (100 sq ft). Do not confuse this with square feet or square meters.
- Land measurements use specialized units. In addition to acres and hectares, you may encounter ares (100 sq m), square rods, or sections (640 acres). Know which units your local market uses.
- Convert once from your source figure. Chaining several manual conversions together compounds rounding errors. Convert directly from your original measurement instead.
- Keep an extra decimal place for small results. Acre and hectare values are often small fractions. Rounding to two decimals too early can noticeably shift the number when you later multiply it back out for a purchase or a legal description.
Disclaimer: Conversions use standard international conversion factors. For legal property descriptions or official land records, always reference surveyed boundaries and official documents. Conversion rounding may not match survey-grade precision.
Cost, price, and density figures on this page reflect approximate U.S. averages as of August 2026 and vary by region, supplier, and material availability.
Frequently asked questions.
How many square feet are in an acre?
One acre equals 43,560 square feet. To convert acres to square feet, multiply the acre value by 43,560. Use our calculator above for instant results.
How do I convert square feet to square meters?
Multiply the square footage by 0.092903 to get square meters. For example, 1,000 sq ft × 0.092903 = 92.903 m². Use our converter above: just select the conversion type and enter your value.
How many square yards are in a square foot?
One square yard equals 9 square feet. To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9. For example, 900 sq ft ÷ 9 = 100 sq yd. This is a common conversion for flooring, carpet, and landscaping materials.
What is a hectare?
A hectare is a metric unit of area equal to 10,000 square meters, or approximately 2.471 acres. One hectare equals 107,639 square feet. Hectares are commonly used for land measurement internationally, while acres are used in the US and UK.
How do I convert acres to square feet?
Multiply the acre value by 43,560. For example, 2 acres × 43,560 = 87,120 sq ft. This conversion is essential for real estate, land development, and construction site planning where both acreage and square footage are needed.
How do I convert square inches to square feet?
Divide square inches by 144 (since 1 sq ft = 12 × 12 = 144 sq in). For example, 2,880 sq in ÷ 144 = 20 sq ft. This conversion is commonly needed when working with tile, small materials, or detailed architectural plans.
