Weight Calculator: Free Online Weight Conversion Tool
Use this weight calculator to convert a single value in pounds into US tons, kilograms, and metric tonnes at the same time. Enter one weight and see all four units side by side — useful for material ordering, checking axle or truck load limits, and reconciling quotes that mix imperial and metric units. Because pounds is the base unit, it's a quick way to sanity-check a scale ticket or delivery slip that only lists one of the four figures.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter the weight in pounds. The calculator uses pounds as the base unit for all conversions.
- Read the converted values. US tons, kilograms, and metric tonnes are calculated and displayed instantly.
- Adjust and recalculate. Change the pounds value to check a different load or delivery weight.
- Compare against limits or quotes. Use the converted figures to check truck weight limits or reconcile a metric spec sheet against a US-ton quote.
- Save the figures for your paperwork. Note the converted values on the delivery ticket or job log so anyone reviewing the file later doesn't have to redo the math.
How do you calculate weight conversions?
All three conversions are derived directly from the pounds value you enter, using fixed conversion factors for each target unit. Because pounds is the shared starting point, the three results always stay consistent with one another.
US Tons = Pounds ÷ 2,000
Kilograms = Pounds ÷ 2.20462
Metric Tonnes = Pounds ÷ 2,204.62
Where:
- Pounds: the base weight value you enter.
- 2,000: pounds per US short ton.
- 2.20462: pounds per kilogram.
- 2,204.62: pounds per metric tonne (1,000 kg).
Example calculation.
Scenario: A load ticket shows 9,500 lbs of asphalt millings, and you need the weight in tons and kilograms to log the delivery.
- Convert to tons: 9,500 ÷ 2,000 = 4.75 tons
- Convert to kilograms: 9,500 ÷ 2.20462 = 4,309.13 kg
- Convert to metric tonnes: 9,500 ÷ 2,204.62 = 4.309 tonnes
Result: 9,500 lbs equals 4.75 tons, approximately 4,309.13 kg, or 4.309 metric tonnes.
For a smaller example, an 80 lb bag of concrete mix converts to 80 ÷ 2,000 = 0.04 tons and 80 ÷ 2.20462 = 36.29 kg — handy when you're loading pallets and need to stay under a forklift's rated capacity.
Tips from the field.
- US construction uses short tons (2,000 lbs).International projects often use metric tonnes (2,204.62 lbs). Confirm which unit a quote references before comparing prices.
- Material weight varies a lot by type. A cubic yard of concrete runs about 4,000 lbs (2 tons), asphalt about 3,900 lbs, gravel 2,700–3,000 lbs, and topsoil 2,000–2,700 lbs. Use a material-specific calculator when converting volume to weight.
- Check axle and gross vehicle weight limits.Converting a load to pounds and tons lets you compare it directly against posted truck or bridge weight limits before dispatching a delivery.
- Round up for logistics, round to spec for paperwork. When estimating how many truckloads a job needs, round tonnage up; when filling out shipping or customs paperwork, use the precise converted figure.
- Cross-check against the metric tonnes figure. Since a metric tonne (2,204.62 lb) is heavier than a US short ton (2,000 lb), a shipment that's "5 tonnes" is more material than "5 tons" — a mix-up that's easy to make on international orders.

Frequently asked questions.
How many pounds are in a ton?
One US short ton equals 2,000 pounds. One metric tonne equals 2,204.62 pounds. Construction materials are typically ordered by the short ton in the US. Use our calculator to convert between all weight units.
How do I convert pounds to tons?
Divide pounds by 2,000 to get US short tons. Example: 10,000 lbs ÷ 2,000 = 5 tons. For metric tonnes: divide by 2,204.62. Our calculator handles all conversions instantly.
How do I convert kilograms to pounds?
Multiply kilograms by 2.20462. Example: 100 kg × 2.20462 = 220.46 lbs. For quick estimates: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs. A 25 kg bag of cement weighs ~55 lbs.
How much does a cubic yard of material weigh?
Depends on the material: concrete ~4,000 lbs (2 tons), asphalt ~3,900 lbs (1.95 tons), gravel ~2,700-3,000 lbs (1.35-1.5 tons), topsoil ~2,000-2,700 lbs (1-1.35 tons), sand ~2,700-3,200 lbs (1.35-1.6 tons). Use our material-specific calculators for exact weights.
What's the difference between a ton and a tonne?
A US short ton = 2,000 lbs (907.18 kg). A metric tonne = 1,000 kg (2,204.62 lbs). A UK long ton = 2,240 lbs (1,016 kg). US construction uses short tons. International projects use metric tonnes. Always clarify which ton is being quoted.
