Weight Converter
Use this weight converter to convert a value in US short tons into pounds, kilograms, and metric tonnes all at once. It's built for reconciling material orders, shipping weights, and load tickets across the imperial and metric units used in construction, aggregate hauling, and steel or equipment specs. Because the base unit is tons, it's built for the common case of starting with a supplier's ton-based quote and needing the pound, kilogram, or tonne equivalent for a different part of the paperwork.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter the weight in tons. Type the number of US short tons you want to convert.
- Read the converted values. Pounds, kilograms, and metric tonnes are calculated and shown together.
- Adjust for a new value. Change the tons figure to convert a different load, order, or shipment.
- Cross-check against your paperwork. Compare the converted figures against supplier invoices or scale tickets quoted in other units.
How do you calculate weight conversions?
Because this calculator is based on tons, each output is derived by multiplying the tons value you enter by a fixed conversion factor. It is worth noting that mass (kilograms) and weight (pounds, tons) are technically different physical quantities, but at Earth's surface gravity they are treated as directly convertible for everyday construction use.
Pounds = Tons × 2,000
Kilograms = Tons × 907.185
Metric Tonnes = Tons × 0.907185
Where:
- Tons: the value you enter, in US short tons (2,000 lb).
- 2,000: pounds in one US short ton.
- 907.185: kilograms in one US short ton.
- 0.907185: metric tonnes in one US short ton.
Example calculation.
Scenario: Convert 5.75 tons (US short) of asphalt into pounds, kilograms, and metric tonnes for a delivery log.
- Tons to pounds: 5.75 × 2,000 = 11,500 lb
- Tons to kilograms: 5.75 × 907.185 = 5,216.31 kg
- Tons to metric tonnes: 5.75 × 0.907185 = 5.22 tonnes
Result: 5.75 US tons equals11,500 pounds, about 5,216.31 kg, or 5.22 metric tonnes.
For a lighter load, 0.5 tons of rebar converts to 0.5 × 2,000 = 1,000 lb and 0.5 × 907.185 = 453.59 kg — a useful check when a crane or hoist has a metric-rated capacity.
Tips from the field.
- Know which "ton" you are dealing with. The short ton (2,000 lbs) is standard in the US. The metric tonne (1,000 kg, ≈2,204.62 lbs) is standard internationally. The UK long ton (2,240 lbs) still shows up in some commodity contracts. Confirm before comparing figures.
- Weight isn't volume. This converter handles weight units only. To convert between weight and volume (tons to cubic yards, for example) you need the material's density, which varies by product and moisture content. Use one of our material-specific calculators for those conversions.
- Watch dump truck limits. A standard tandem dump truck legally hauls roughly 10–14 tons. Converting your total order to tons tells you how many truckloads to schedule.
- Keep precision for paperwork, round for planning.Use the full decimal figure on shipping and customs documents; round up to the next ton or tonne when estimating truckloads or budget.
- Kilograms and metric tonnes move together. A metric tonne is always 1,000 kg, so once you have the kilogram figure you can get tonnes by moving the decimal point three places — a fast mental check on the calculator's output.
Disclaimer: Conversions use standard international conversion factors. Mass and weight are technically different physical quantities (mass is invariant, weight depends on gravity), but are treated as interchangeable for Earth-surface construction purposes. PavementCalculator.com assumes no liability for estimation errors.
Cost, price, and density figures on this page reflect approximate U.S. averages as of August 2026 and vary by region, supplier, and material availability.
Frequently asked questions.
How many pounds are in a ton?
One US short ton equals 2,000 pounds. Use our calculator above to convert between tons, pounds, kilograms, and metric tonnes instantly.
How do I convert pounds to kilograms?
Divide the number of pounds by 2.20462 to get kilograms. For example, 2,000 lb ÷ 2.20462 ≈ 907.185 kg. One ton equals approximately 907.185 kilograms.
What is the difference between a ton and a metric tonne?
A US short ton is 2,000 pounds (about 907.185 kg), while a metric tonne (also spelled tonne) is 1,000 kilograms (about 2,204.62 pounds). A metric tonne is approximately 1.102 US tons.
How many kilograms are in a ton?
One US short ton equals approximately 907.185 kilograms. This is based on the conversion of 2,000 pounds per ton and 2.20462 pounds per kilogram.
