Fill Sand Calculator: Free Online Fill Sand Calculator

Use our free fill sand calculator to figure out how much sand you need for leveling, backfilling, and grading projects. Enter your area's length, width, and depth to get the coverage area, volume in cubic yards, and estimated weight in tons.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Enter the area length and width. Measure the footprint you're filling, in feet.
  2. Enter the fill depth. Use your target depth in inches, such as 4-6 inches for backfilling a trench or leveling a low spot.
  3. Review your results. The calculator returns area (sq ft), fill sand volume (cu yd), and fill sand weight (tons) instantly.
  4. Add extra for compaction. Loose sand settles once compacted, so plan for a small buffer above the raw volume.
  5. Confirm the fill sand is right for the job. Fill sand suits drainage-focused, non-structural fill; for load-bearing applications, use engineered fill or crushed stone instead.

How do you calculate fill sand quantity?

The calculator converts your area and depth into a volume, then applies an average density to estimate weight.

Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Fill Sand Volume (cu yd) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324

Fill Sand Weight (tons) = Volume (cu yd) × 1.35

Where:

  • Length & Width: The dimensions of the area to be filled, in feet.
  • Depth: The fill thickness, in inches.
  • 1.35: The average weight of compacted fill sand in tons per cubic yard, roughly 2,700 lb/cu yd dry.

Example calculation.

Scenario: You're backfilling a 20 ft × 10 ft area around a foundation with 6 inches of fill sand.

  1. Calculate the area: 20 ft × 10 ft = 200 sq ft.
  2. Convert depth to feet: 6 in ÷ 12 = 0.5 ft.
  3. Calculate volume in cubic feet: 200 sq ft × 0.5 ft = 100 cu ft.
  4. Convert to cubic yards: 100 cu ft ÷ 27 = 3.70 cu yd.
  5. Calculate weight: 3.70 cu yd × 1.35 = 5.00 tons.

Result: This project needs approximately3.70 cubic yards, weighing about5.0 tons, of fill sand.

Tips from the field.

  • Fill sand is not structural fill. It's ideal for backfilling trenches, leveling, and under pools where drainage matters more than load-bearing strength.
  • Compact in lifts with water. Wetting fill sand lightly between 4-6 inch lifts settles the grains together for a firmer, more stable fill.
  • Fill sand is cheaper than masonry sand. Because it skips the fine screening process, fill sand typically costs 30-50% less than washed masonry sand.
  • Order 10% extra. Compaction settlement and uneven excavation edges use more sand than the flat calculation suggests.
  • Keep it away from mortar and concrete mixes. Fill sand's coarser, less consistent grading makes it unsuitable for masonry work; use masonry or concrete sand for those jobs.

Frequently asked questions.

What is fill sand used for?

Fill sand is coarse, clean sand for filling low areas, backfilling foundations and utility trenches, under pools and patios, and general construction fill where drainage matters. It compacts well and drains excellently: not for structural fill. Weighs 1.2-1.35 tons per cubic yard dry.

How much does fill sand cost?

Fill sand costs $15-$30 per ton or $20-$40 per cubic yard delivered. It is the cheapest sand type: less expensive than masonry sand ($25-$40/ton) or play sand ($40-$50/ton). Delivery fees typically add $50-$100 per load.

What is the difference between fill sand and masonry sand?

Fill sand is coarse, contains some small stones and clay, and compacts well: ideal for backfill and leveling. Masonry sand is fine, clean, and screened: used for mortar, stucco, and paver bedding. Fill sand is 30-50% cheaper.

How do I calculate how much fill sand I need?

Measure length × width × depth in feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards. For a 20×10 ft area at 4 inches: 20 × 10 × 0.33 ÷ 27 = 2.47 cu yd. Add 10% for compaction. Use our calculator above.
