Topsoil Calculator: Free Online Topsoil Volume Estimator
Use our free topsoil calculator to determine exactly how much topsoil you need in cubic yards and cubic feet for your garden bed, new lawn, or landscaping project. Designed for landscapers, gardeners, and DIY homeowners, this tool calculates the precise volume of topsoil required based on your area dimensions and desired depth. Enter your length, width, and depth to get instant, accurate results for ordering.
How to use this calculator.
- Measure your project area. Measure the length and width of the area to be covered in feet. For irregular garden beds, break the area into rectangles and calculate each section separately.
- Select the topsoil depth. For new lawns, apply 4-6 inches. For overseeding or top-dressing an existing lawn, use 1-2 inches. Vegetable gardens benefit from 6-12 inches of quality topsoil.
- Review your results. The calculator displays volume in both cubic yards (the standard unit for bulk topsoil delivery) and cubic feet (useful for bagged topsoil purchased at garden centers).
How do you calculate topsoil volume?
Topsoil volume is calculated from rectangular area dimensions and depth.
Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27
Where:
- 324 is the combined conversion factor (12 × 27) for direct cubic yard calculation.
- 1 cubic yard of topsoil weighs approximately 2,000-2,700 lb (1-1.35 tons) depending on moisture and organic content.
- Bagged topsoil is sold in cubic feet. A typical bag contains 1-2 cubic feet. Bulk delivery is far more economical for projects over 2-3 cubic yards.
Example calculation.
Let's calculate the topsoil needed for a new vegetable garden.
Scenario: You are building a raised vegetable garden that is 25 ft long and 15 ft wide with 8 inches of topsoil.
- Calculate cubic feet: 25 ft × 15 ft × 8 in ÷ 12 = 250 cu ft
- Convert to cubic yards: 250 cu ft ÷ 27 = 9.26 cu yd
Result: You need approximately 9.5 cubic yardsof topsoil for this garden bed. Bulk delivery from a landscape supply yard costs $25-$50 per yard delivered. Bagged topsoil at $3-$5 per 1.5 cu ft bag would cost $500-$800 for the same volume -- bulk delivery is far cheaper.
Tips from the field.
- Screen your topsoil. Bulk topsoil often contains rocks, roots, and debris. Screen it through a 1/2-inch mesh before placing in garden beds. Most landscape suppliers offer screened topsoil at a premium -- worth the extra cost for garden applications.
- Do not over-till existing soil. When adding topsoil to an existing lawn or garden, till only the top 2-3 inches of existing soil to blend. Over-tilling destroys soil structure and brings weed seeds to the surface.
- Check the organic content. Quality topsoil should be dark in color and contain 5-10% organic matter. Avoid topsoil that is mostly sand or clay -- it will not support healthy plant growth. Ask the supplier about the source and composition.
- Allow for settling. Loose topsoil settles 10-20% after the first few waterings. Order 10-15% more than your calculated volume to account for settling. Water the soil thoroughly after placement to accelerate initial settling.

Frequently asked questions.
How much topsoil do I need for a garden bed?
For a 30 ft by 20 ft garden bed with 4 inches of topsoil, you need approximately 7.4 cubic yards or 200 cubic feet of topsoil. Use our calculator for your exact measurements.
How deep should topsoil be for a lawn?
For new lawns, apply 4-6 inches of topsoil. For overseeding or top-dressing an existing lawn, 1-2 inches is sufficient. Vegetable gardens benefit from 6-12 inches of quality topsoil for deep root development.
How much does a cubic yard of topsoil weigh?
A cubic yard of dry topsoil weighs approximately 2,000 to 2,700 pounds (1 to 1.35 tons). Moist topsoil is heavier, weighing up to 3,000 lb/yd³. Topsoil weight varies significantly based on moisture content and organic matter composition.
How much topsoil do I need for a lawn?
For new lawns: apply 4-6 inches (0.33-0.5 ft) of topsoil. For overseeding: 1/4-1/2 inch. A 1,000 sq ft lawn at 4 inches needs: 1000 × 0.33 ÷ 27 = 12.3 cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch. Use our calculator above.
How much does topsoil cost?
Topsoil costs $20-$40 per cubic yard delivered. Screened topsoil: $25-$40/yd³. Premium garden mix: $30-$50/yd³. Delivery adds $50-$100. Most suppliers require 5-yard minimum. Bulk is much cheaper than bagged ($2-$4 per 40-lb bag = $135-$270 per yard equivalent).
