Paver Calculator: Calculate Pavers Needed for Any Project
Use our free paver calculator to determine exactly how many pavers you need for a patio, walkway, or driveway. Enter your project dimensions and paver size to get an accurate unit count, already adjusted for a waste factor, so you order the right amount the first time.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter the project area. Input the length and width of the patio, walkway, or driveway you're paving, in feet.
- Enter paver dimensions. Input your paver's length and width in inches; check the manufacturer spec sheet or measure a sample unit.
- Set your waste factor. The default is 10% for a standard running-bond layout; increase it for herringbone, basketweave, or curved patterns.
- Review your results. The calculator returns total area, single-paver area, and the number of pavers to order.
- Round up to full units. Most suppliers sell by the piece or the pallet, so round your final count up before placing the order.
How do you calculate paver quantities and materials?
To find the paver count, convert the project area from square feet to square inches, divide by the area of a single paver, then add your waste factor to cover cuts and breakage.
Pavers Needed = (Area (sq ft) × 144 ÷ Paver Area (sq in)) × (1 + Waste %)
Where:
- Area: The total project length × width, in square feet.
- 144: The conversion factor from square feet to square inches.
- Paver Area: The face length × width of a single paver, in square inches.
- Waste %: The extra percentage added for cuts, breakage, and pattern complexity; 10% is standard, 15-20% for intricate patterns.
Example calculation.
Let's size the paver order for a backyard patio.
Scenario: You're paving a 20 ft × 15 ft patio using 8-inch × 4-inch pavers with a 10% waste factor.
- Calculate the area: 20 ft × 15 ft = 300 sq ft
- Calculate the paver area: 8 in × 4 in = 32 sq in
- Convert area to square inches: 300 sq ft × 144 = 43,200 sq in
- Calculate the base count: 43,200 sq in ÷ 32 sq in = 1,350 pavers
- Add the waste factor: 1,350 × 1.10 = 1,485 pavers
Result: You need approximately 1,485 pavers for this patio.
Tips from the field.
- Order the full pallet count. A standard pallet holds 400-500 sq ft of pavers; ordering by the pallet often saves on delivery fees and guarantees matching dye lots.
- Increase waste for cut-heavy layouts. Diagonal, herringbone, and curved borders can push waste to 15-20%, since more units get trimmed to fit.
- Buy from one dye lot. Color can vary slightly between production batches, so order all pavers for a project at once to avoid visible seams.
- Don't forget bedding sand and edge restraints. Budget roughly a 1-inch sand bedding layer under the pavers and rigid or paver edging around the perimeter to lock the pattern in place.
- Confirm thickness for the application. Foot-traffic pavers run 1-3/8 to 2-3/8 inches thick; driveways need at least 2-3/8-inch pavers rated for vehicle loads.
- Plan the base and bedding layers separately. Pavers sit on a compacted crushed-stone base topped with a leveled sand bedding course; use our paver base calculator to size that material before you order pavers.
This calculator handles rectangular layouts directly. For L-shaped or multi-section patios, split the project into rectangles, run each section separately, and add the totals together before applying a single waste factor to the combined count.

Frequently asked questions.
How many pavers do I need?
Multiply your patio area (length × width in feet) by 144 to get square inches, then divide by the area of a single paver (length × width in inches). Add 10% for cuts and waste. For example, a 300 sq ft patio using 4×8 inch pavers needs approximately 1,350 pavers (300 × 144 ÷ 32 × 1.1).
How much does a paver patio cost?
Paver patios cost $12 to $25 per square foot installed on average. Materials alone cost $3 to $8 per sq ft for standard concrete pavers, $8 to $15 for brick, and $15 to $30 for natural stone. A 300 sq ft patio typically costs $3,600-$7,500 installed.
How much paver sand do I need?
For a 1-inch sand bedding layer, you need approximately 0.0031 cubic yards (or 1.5 fifty-pound bags) of sand per square foot of patio area. For a 300 sq ft patio: 300 × 0.0031 = 0.93 cubic yards of bedding sand. Add joint sand at about 1 bag per 60 sq ft.
What size pavers are best for a patio?
Larger pavers (12×12 inches, 16×16 inches, or 24×24 inches) create a modern look and are faster to install. Standard 4×8 inch pavers are classic and budget-friendly. For driveways, use thicker pavers (2-3/8 inches minimum) rated for vehicle loads.
How do I calculate pavers for a circle?
Calculate the circle area: π × radius² (in feet). Convert to square inches by multiplying by 144. Divide by the area of a single paver in square inches. Add 15-20% extra for a circular pattern since more cuts are needed. Our calculator above works for any rectangular area.
How many pavers in a pallet?
A standard pallet holds 400-500 square feet of concrete pavers, depending on paver size and thickness. This is typically 12-16 layers with 40-60 pavers per layer. One pallet weighs 3,000-4,000 lbs. For large projects, order by the pallet to save on delivery fees.
