Flooring Cost Calculator: Free Online Flooring Cost Calculator

Use our free flooring cost calculator to estimate the installed cost of a new floor, whether you're pricing hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, carpet, or tile. Enter your room's length and width along with an installed price per square foot, and the calculator returns the floor area and the estimated total material cost — a quick way to compare options before you commit to one.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Enter room length and width. Measure the longest wall and the wall perpendicular to it, in feet. For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles and add the areas together afterward.
  2. Set your cost per square foot. This is the installed price — material plus labor combined — for your chosen flooring. Hardwood typically runs $6–$12/sq ft installed, laminate $3–$8, vinyl plank $3–$7, carpet $3–$8, and tile $5–$15.
  3. Review your results. The calculator instantly returns floor area and estimated total cost.
  4. Compare flooring types. Re-run the calculation with different price points to see how material choice affects the total for the same room.

How do you calculate flooring project costs?

Flooring cost is simply the room's area multiplied by the installed price per square foot.

Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Estimated Total Cost = Length × Width × Cost per Sq Ft

Where:

  • Length and Width: The room's dimensions in feet, measured wall to wall.
  • Cost per Sq Ft: The installed price for your flooring material, combining product cost and labor. This varies widely by material grade and region.

Example calculation.

Let's price a bedroom floor in luxury vinyl plank.

Scenario: A 14 ft × 11 ft bedroom, with luxury vinyl plank installed at $5.50/sq ft.

  1. Calculate the area: 14 ft × 11 ft = 154 sq ft
  2. Calculate total cost: 154 sq ft × $5.50/sq ft = $847

Result: This bedroom floor will cost approximately $847 in luxury vinyl plank, installed.

Tips from the field.

  • Order 7-10% extra material. Plank and tile flooring generates cutting waste at walls, doorways, and diagonal layouts. Running short mid-install means a delayed job waiting on a dye-lot match.
  • Let wood and laminate acclimate. Solid and engineered hardwood, and some laminates, need 3–5 days in the room at normal humidity before installation to avoid gapping or buckling later.
  • Subfloor prep is often a separate line item. Leveling compound, plywood underlayment, or moisture barriers can add $1–$3/sq ft and aren't always included in a quoted installed rate — ask what's covered.
  • Removal of old flooring costs extra. Tear-out and disposal of existing carpet, tile, or vinyl typically adds $1–$3/sq ft on top of new installation.
  • Get quotes with material and labor itemized separately. This makes it easy to compare bids and to see where you can save by supplying materials yourself.
  • Check the flooring direction and pattern. Diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, and running long boards the length of a narrow room all increase waste and labor time compared to a simple straight lay.

Flooring pricing is quoted per square foot far more consistently than most other trades, which makes this calculator especially handy for side-by-side comparisons. Because the installed rate already bundles labor with material, you don't need to track separate line items the way you would for a driveway or patio — just get an accurate installed quote per material and let the area do the rest of the work.
