Concrete Wall Calculator: Free Online Wall Volume Estimator
Use our free concrete wall calculator to determine exactly how much concrete you need for foundation walls, retaining walls, and stem walls. Designed for foundation contractors, home builders, and structural engineers, this tool calculates concrete volume in cubic yards and cubic feet from your wall dimensions. Enter your wall length, height, and thickness to get instant, accurate volume results for ordering.
How to use this calculator.
- Measure your wall dimensions. Measure the total length of the wall in feet, the height from footing to top of wall, and the wall thickness in inches.
- Enter the length. For foundation walls, measure the perimeter of the foundation. For freestanding walls, measure the straight-line length.
- Enter the height. Foundation walls are typically 8-10 feet tall. Retaining walls vary from 3-6 feet for residential projects.
- Enter the thickness. Residential foundation walls are typically 8-10 inches thick. Retaining walls are 6-12 inches thick depending on height and soil loads.
- Review your results. The calculator displays volume in cubic yards and cubic feet. Round up to the nearest 0.5 yard and add 5-10% for waste.
How do you calculate concrete volume for walls?
Concrete wall volume is calculated as the cross-sectional area (length × height) multiplied by the wall thickness.
Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Height (ft) × Thickness (in) ÷ 12
Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27
Where:
- Thickness is divided by 12 to convert inches to feet for consistent units.
- 27 cu ft is the standard conversion from cubic feet to cubic yards.
- Wall length should include all sections. For a rectangular foundation, total the lengths of all four walls.
Example calculation.
Let's calculate the concrete needed for a foundation wall.
Scenario: You are pouring a foundation wall for a 40 ft by 30 ft rectangular basement with 8 ft tall, 10-inch thick walls.
- Calculate the perimeter: (40 ft + 30 ft) × 2 = 140 ft of wall length
- Calculate cubic feet: 140 ft × 8 ft × 10 in ÷ 12 = 933.3 cu ft
- Convert to cubic yards: 933.3 cu ft ÷ 27 = 34.57 cu yd
Result: You need approximately 35 cubic yardsof concrete for these foundation walls. At $150 per yard, the concrete cost is approximately $5,250. Add 5% waste (1.75 yards) and order 37 yards.
Tips from the field.
- Pour walls in a single continuous pour. Stopping and restarting a wall pour creates cold joints that leak. Coordinate multiple ready-mix trucks so concrete placement is continuous from start to finish.
- Use a pencil vibrator. Consolidate the concrete in wall forms with an immersion vibrator. Insert every 18-24 inches around the perimeter. Under-vibrated walls have honeycombing; over- vibrated walls have aggregate segregation.
- Check form alignment during the pour. Concrete exerts about 150 lb per square foot of lateral pressure per foot of height. A 10 ft wall form experiences 1,500 PSF at the bottom. Watch for form bulging and brace as needed.
- Strip forms at the right time. Vertical forms can be stripped after 12-24 hours in normal temperatures. Horizontal formwork (soffits) must stay in place for 7-14 days or until concrete reaches 70% of design strength.

Frequently asked questions.
How thick should a concrete foundation wall be?
Residential foundation walls: 8-10 inches for single-story, 10-12 inches for two-story. IRC requires minimum 7.5 inches for basement walls. Retaining walls under 4 ft: 8 inches. Over 4 ft: 10-12 inches with engineering. Always check local codes.
How much concrete do I need for a retaining wall?
Calculate the volume by multiplying wall length × height × thickness (converted to feet). Divide by 27 for cubic yards. For a 30 ft long × 8 ft tall wall with 8-inch thickness, you need approximately 5.93 cubic yards of concrete. Add 5-10% for waste.
What type of concrete is used for walls?
Foundation and retaining walls typically use 3,000 to 4,000 PSI concrete. Walls that will be exposed to freezing and thawing or de-icing chemicals should use air-entrained concrete with a minimum compressive strength of 4,000 PSI.
How do I use this calculator?
Enter your project dimensions in the input fields above and the results update automatically. For the most accurate results, measure carefully and use consistent units (feet for length/width, inches for depth). Add 5-10% extra for waste and variations.
How much does a concrete wall cost?
Poured concrete walls cost $30-$50 per sq ft of wall face installed (forms, rebar, concrete, labor). An 8-inch thick, 8-ft tall wall: $240-$400 per linear foot. A 30-foot wall: $7,200-$12,000. Precast or block walls are cheaper than formed/poured walls.
