Siding Calculator
Use our free siding calculator to determine the total square footage of siding material you need for exterior walls. Built for contractors and homeowners planning a siding installation or replacement, it starts from your wall dimensions, deducts a typical percentage for windows and doors, and adds a waste factor for cuts and laps. Enter your wall length, wall height, opening percentage, and waste factor to get an instant square-footage estimate.
Siding is sold and priced by the square, so an accurate square-footage figure directly affects your material budget. Most estimators don't measure every window and door individually for a rough quote; instead they use a percentage deduction for openings, which is faster and accurate enough for ordering purposes on a typical house.
How to use this calculator.
- Measure the wall length. Walk the exterior and add up the total linear footage of the walls to be sided (the perimeter, for a full house).
- Enter the wall height. Measure from foundation to soffit, typically 8–10 ft.
- Set the openings percentage. Windows and doors typically take up 15–25% of total wall area; the default is 15%.
- Set the waste factor. Default 10%; increase for complex walls with many corners, angles, or fiber cement siding.
- Review your results. Total wall area and siding needed calculate instantly when you click Calculate.
How do you calculate A siding calculator helps you determine how much siding material you need by measuring wall area, subtracting openings like windows and doors, and adding a waste factor.?
Siding area starts from the gross wall area, subtracts a percentage for openings, then adds a percentage back for waste.
Total Wall Area (sq ft) = Wall Length × Wall Height
Siding Needed (sq ft) = Total Wall Area × (1 − Openings %) × (1 + Waste %)
Where:
- Wall Length: The total linear footage of exterior wall to be sided, in feet.
- Wall Height: The height from foundation to soffit, in feet.
- Openings %: The share of wall area taken up by windows and doors, typically 15–25%.
- Waste %: Extra material for cuts, overlaps, and mistakes, typically 5–15% depending on siding type and wall complexity.
Example calculation.
Let's estimate siding for a rectangular house with a 160 ft total wall length (perimeter), 9 ft wall height, 15% openings, and a 10% waste factor.
- Total wall area: 160 ft × 9 ft = 1,440 sq ft
- Subtract openings: 1,440 sq ft × (1 − 0.15) = 1,440 × 0.85 = 1,224 sq ft
- Add waste: 1,224 sq ft × (1 + 0.10) = 1,224 × 1.10 = 1,346.4 sq ft
- Convert to squares: 1,346.4 ÷ 100 = 13.46 squares
Result: You need approximately1,346 sq ft of siding: order 14 squares to ensure adequate coverage.
Tips from the field.
- Measure each wall individually for complex homes. A single perimeter measurement works for rectangular houses, but footprints with bump-outs, gables, and angles are more accurate when measured wall by wall.
- Different siding materials need different waste factors.Vinyl siding typically needs 10% waste; fiber cement may need 15% because cuts are less forgiving. Lap siding generates more waste than vertical panel siding.
- Budget separately for starter strips and trim. The square footage calculation covers field siding only; order starter strip, J-channel, corner posts, and trim boards as separate line items.
- Gable ends add area. If your walls include triangular gable sections, measure and add that area separately before running it through this calculator.
- Check local building codes. Some jurisdictions require specific siding materials, fire ratings, or house-wrap methods; verify before ordering.
Disclaimer: Calculations are estimates. Actual siding requirements vary with house geometry, siding type, waste from cuts and laps, and installation method. Always have a professional take final measurements before ordering materials.
Cost, price, and density figures on this page reflect approximate U.S. averages as of August 2026 and vary by region, supplier, and material availability.
Frequently asked questions.
How much waste should I account for when ordering siding?
Standard waste factors range from 5-15% depending on the complexity of your walls. More complex walls with many corners, gables, or unusual angles require higher waste allowances.
What percentage of wall area do openings typically take?
On average, windows and doors account for 15-25% of total wall area on residential homes. This calculator defaults to 15% but adjust based on your specific wall configuration.
How is siding measured and sold?
Vinyl and fiber cement siding are typically sold by the square (100 sq ft) or by the square foot. Always check the manufacturer's packaging and add the waste factor to your total before ordering.
How much siding do I need for a house?
Calculate total exterior wall area (perimeter × height) minus windows and doors. Add 10% for waste and cuts. A 1,500 sq ft ranch home with 8 ft walls: ~1,200-1,400 sq ft of siding. Use our calculator: enter wall dimensions and opening sizes.
How long does siding last?
Vinyl: 20-40 years. Fiber cement (Hardie): 50+ years. Wood: 20-40 years with maintenance. Engineered wood: 30-50 years. Aluminum: 30-50 years. Vinyl is lowest cost and maintenance. Fiber cement is most durable. Replace siding when you see warping, rot, fading, or high heating/cooling bills.
