Deck Calculator
Use this deck calculator to figure out how many decking boards you need to cover a deck of a given size, plus the estimated material cost. Enter your deck's length and width, your joist spacing, the actual face width of your decking boards, and your price per square foot, and the calculator returns the deck area, the number of boards to order, and the total decking cost.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter deck length and width. Measure the outer dimensions of the deck surface in feet.
- Enter joist spacing. Input your framing spacing in inches — 16 inches on center is standard for most residential decks. This value is captured alongside your board and cost totals for your records.
- Enter board width. Use the actual face width of your decking board in inches: 5.5 inches for a standard 5/4×6, or check your composite manufacturer's spec sheet.
- Enter price per square foot. Use your decking material's installed or material-only cost.
- Review your results. Area, boards needed, and estimated cost update instantly.
How do you calculate A deck calculator helps you estimate deck area, the number of decking boards required, and the total material cost based on your deck dimensions, board width, joist spacing, and price per square foot.?
The calculator finds deck area directly, then works out how many boards are needed by dividing the deck's width into board-widths (plus a ⅛ in. gap) and multiplying by how many 8-foot board lengths fit along the deck's length.
Area (sq ft) = Deck Length × Deck Width
Decking Boards = [(Deck Width × 12) ÷ (Board Width + 0.125)] × (Deck Length ÷ 8)
Estimated Cost = Area × Price per Square Foot
Where:
- Deck Length / Width: the outer dimensions of the deck surface, in feet.
- Board Width: the actual face width of one decking board, in inches. 0.125 in. (⅛ in.) is added to account for the standard drainage gap between boards.
- 8 ft board length: the second formula assumes 8-foot board stock. If you're buying longer boards, this will overstate the board count — adjust down accordingly.
- Price per Square Foot: your material's cost per square foot of deck area.
Example calculation.
Scenario: You're decking a 16 ft long, 12 ft wide deck with 5.5-inch composite boards, joists on 16-inch centers, at $25 per square foot.
- Calculate area: 16 ft × 12 ft = 192 sq ft.
- Boards across the width: (12 × 12) ÷ (5.5 + 0.125) = 144 ÷ 5.625 = 25.6 board-widths.
- Board lengths needed: 16 ÷ 8 = 2 (two 8-ft board lengths span the 16-ft deck length).
- Total boards: 25.6 × 2 = 51.2, rounded up to 52 boards to allow for square cuts and staggered joints.
- Estimated cost: 192 sq ft × $25 = $4,800.
Result: order approximately 52 decking boards for about$4,800 in material.
Tips from the field.
- Round up, always. A fractional board count like 51.2 becomes the next whole board on the order sheet — you can't buy a fifth of a board.
- Check the manufacturer's joist spacing. 16 inches on center is standard for wood decking, but many composite products require 12-inch spacing for perpendicular installation, tighter still for picture-frame borders or angled runs.
- Leave a drainage gap. ⅛ inch is standard for wood; composite gapping varies by temperature at install time, so check the spec sheet.
- Order 10% extra beyond the calculated total. Cut ends, culls, and mistakes add up fast on a deck build.
- Framing is a separate takeoff. This calculator covers the decking surface and its cost only — joists, beams, posts, and footings need their own material list.

Frequently asked questions.
What is standard joist spacing for a deck?
Standard joist spacing for residential decks is 16 inches on center for composite decking and can be 16 or 24 inches for 2x6 wood decking, depending on the orientation. Always check local building codes and manufacturer requirements.
How much does it cost to build a deck per square foot?
Pressure-treated pine decks cost $15-25 per sq ft, cedar decks $25-40 per sq ft, and composite decks $30-60 per sq ft installed. This calculator estimates material cost only.
What width decking boards are standard?
Standard decking boards are 5.5 inches wide (nominal 6-inch). Composite decking boards are typically available in 5.5-inch widths as well, though some manufacturers offer wider grooved boards.
How much does it cost to build a deck?
Pressure-treated pine decks cost $15-25 per sq ft installed. Cedar: $25-40. Composite (Trex, etc.): $30-60. A 16×12 ft deck (192 sq ft) costs $2,880-$11,520 depending on material. Our calculator estimates material cost only: labor varies by region.
How many deck boards do I need?
Calculate deck area (length × width in feet). Divide by the coverage per board. A 5.5-inch wide board with 1/8-inch gap covers about 0.47 ft of width per board. For a 12-ft wide deck: 12 ÷ 0.47 = ~26 boards. Add 10% for waste, cuts, and defects.
