Masonry Sand Calculator: Free Online Masonry Sand Calculator

Use our free masonry sand calculator to figure out how much sand you need for mortar, stucco, and brick or block laying. Enter your area's length, width, and depth to get the coverage area, sand volume in cubic yards, and estimated weight in tons.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Enter the area length and width. Measure the footprint or stockpile area you're estimating for, in feet.
  2. Enter the sand depth. Use a shallow depth, such as 2 inches, to estimate a working stockpile for mortar or stucco mixing.
  3. Review your results. The calculator returns area (sq ft), masonry sand volume (cu yd), and masonry sand weight (tons) instantly.
  4. Convert to a mix ratio. Once you know your sand volume, apply your mortar or stucco mix ratio to figure out how much cement to order alongside it.
  5. Order 5-10% extra. Spillage during mixing and waste at cut joints reduce your usable sand.

How do you calculate masonry sand quantity?

The calculator converts your area and depth into a volume, then applies an average density to estimate weight.

Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

Masonry Sand Volume (cu yd) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324

Masonry Sand Weight (tons) = Volume (cu yd) × 1.3

Where:

  • Length & Width: The dimensions of the area or stockpile, in feet.
  • Depth: The sand layer thickness, in inches.
  • 1.3: The average weight of masonry sand in tons per cubic yard, roughly 2,600 lb/cu yd. Being fine and washed, masonry sand packs slightly denser than coarse fill sand.

Example calculation.

Scenario: You're estimating a 20 ft × 10 ft stockpile of masonry sand at 2 inches deep for a block-laying job.

  1. Calculate the area: 20 ft × 10 ft = 200 sq ft.
  2. Convert depth to feet: 2 in ÷ 12 = 0.167 ft.
  3. Calculate volume in cubic feet: 200 sq ft × 0.167 ft = 33.3 cu ft.
  4. Convert to cubic yards: 33.3 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.23 cu yd.
  5. Calculate weight: 1.23 cu yd × 1.3 = 1.60 tons.

Result: This job needs approximately1.23 cubic yards, weighing about1.6 tons, of masonry sand.

Tips from the field.

  • Use the right mix ratio. Standard Type S mortar mixes about 1 part cement to 4.5 parts masonry sand; stucco base coats typically run closer to 1 part cement to 3 parts sand.
  • Keep sand dry and covered before mixing. Wet or saturated sand throws off your water-to-cement ratio and weakens the cured mortar.
  • Never substitute fill sand for masonry work. Fill sand contains stones and clay that weaken mortar bond and clog joint tooling; only washed, screened masonry sand belongs in the mix.
  • Budget roughly 3-4 cubic feet of sand per 100 bricks. For block work, plan closer to 6-8 cubic feet per 100 blocks laid.
  • Order 5-10% extra. Spillage and tooling waste during mixing and joint finishing add up over a full job.

Frequently asked questions.

What is masonry sand?

Masonry sand (mason sand, brick sand) is fine, washed sand for mortar, stucco, and grout. It's finer and more uniform than concrete sand. Weighs 1.25-1.35 tons per cubic yard. Do NOT use for concrete (needs coarser concrete sand). Standard Type S mortar uses 4.5 parts masonry sand to 1 part cement.

How do I use this calculator?

Enter your project dimensions in the input fields above and the results update automatically. For the most accurate results, measure carefully and use consistent units (feet for length/width, inches for depth). Add 5-10% extra for waste and variations.

What is masonry sand used for?

Masonry sand is fine, clean sand used for mortar, stucco, and paver bedding. It is screened to remove stones and debris. Unlike fill sand (coarse), masonry sand creates smooth, workable mortar. Use 1 part cement to 2-3 parts masonry sand for standard Type S mortar.

How much masonry sand per 100 bricks?

For 100 standard bricks with 3/8-inch joints: ~3-4 cubic feet of sand. Combined with ~1 bag of Type S mortar cement. For 100 blocks: ~6-8 cubic feet of sand. Use our calculator for exact estimates based on your project dimensions.

How much does masonry sand cost?

Masonry sand costs $25-$40 per ton or $35-$55 per cubic yard delivered. It is 30-50% more expensive than fill sand due to the screening and washing process. Bulk delivery is cheapest for projects over 2-3 yards.
