Limestone Calculator: Free Online Crushed Limestone Estimator
Use our free limestone calculator to determine exactly how much crushed limestone you need by volume and weight for your driveway, patio base, or construction project. Designed for paving contractors, landscapers, and DIY homeowners, this tool calculates the cubic yards and tons of limestone required based on your area and depth. Enter your length, width, depth, and density to get instant, accurate results for ordering.
How to use this calculator.
- Measure the area. Measure the length and width of the area to be covered in feet. For driveways, measure the full length and average width including any turnouts or parking areas.
- Select the depth. For driveway base layers, use 4-6 inches. For walkway base, use 2-4 inches. For construction pads, consult your geotechnical report for the specified lift thickness.
- Adjust the density. Crushed limestone has a typical density of 160 lb/ft³ (about 2.16 tons per cubic yard). This is heavier than gravel, so a cubic yard of limestone weighs more than a cubic yard of the same volume of gravel.
- Review your results. The calculator shows volume in cubic yards and weight in tons. Most quarries and landscape supply yards sell limestone by the ton. Order in full ton increments.
How do you calculate limestone volume and weight?
Limestone volume and weight are calculated from area, depth, and the material's bulk density.
Volume (cu yd) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324
Weight (tons) = Volume (cu yd) × Density (lb/ft³) × 27 ÷ 2,000
Where:
- 160 lb/ft³ is the typical bulk density of crushed limestone aggregate.
- 4,320 lb is the weight of one cubic yard of limestone at 160 lb/ft³ density (2.16 tons).
- Limestone is heavier than gravel or pea gravel, making it excellent for structural base applications where compaction and stability are critical.
Example calculation.
Let's calculate the limestone needed for a driveway base.
Scenario: You are installing a driveway base that is 80 ft long and 14 ft wide with 6 inches of #2 crushed limestone at 160 lb/ft³.
- Calculate the volume: 80 ft × 14 ft × 6 in ÷ 324 = 20.74 cu yd
- Calculate the weight: 20.74 cu yd × 160 lb/ft³ × 27 ÷ 2,000 = 44.8 tons
Result: You need approximately 21 cubic yardsor 45 tons of crushed limestone for this driveway base. At a typical delivered price of $40-$60 per ton, the material cost is approximately $1,800-$2,700.
Tips from the field.
- Use crusher run for bases. Crusher run (limestone screenings mixed with stone) packs tight and forms a nearly solid base. Clean stone (#57, #2) is better for drainage but does not compact as well. Use crusher run under paving and clean stone for French drains.
- Compact in lifts. Compact limestone in 4-6 inch layers for maximum density. A vibratory roller or plate compactor is essential. Hand-tamping is insufficient for any driveway or structural base.
- Grade for drainage. Slope the finished limestone base away from structures at 1-2% (1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot). Flat or reverse-sloped bases trap water and lead to soft spots and pavement failure.
- Order from a quarry when possible. Quarry-direct pricing is typically 20-40% cheaper than landscape supply yards. Most quarries have minimum order quantities (typically 5-10 tons) and may require a truck capable of handling heavy loads.

Frequently asked questions.
How much does a cubic yard of limestone weigh?
A cubic yard of crushed limestone weighs approximately 4,320 pounds (2.16 tons), with a density of about 160 lb/ft³. Limestone is heavier than gravel and pea gravel, making it an excellent choice for driveways and construction base layers.
What size limestone is best for a driveway?
Use 2-3 inch limestone (#2 or #3) for the base layer (4-6 inches deep) and 3/4 inch to 1 inch limestone (#57) for the top or surface layer (2-3 inches deep). Crusher run (limestone fines + stone) packs tightest for a solid foundation.
How much limestone do I need for a 200 ft driveway?
For a 200 ft by 12 ft driveway with 6 inches of limestone, you need approximately 44.4 cubic yards or about 48 tons of limestone (at 160 lb/ft³). Use our calculator for your exact measurements.
How much does limestone cost per ton?
Limestone costs $20-$50 per ton depending on grade. #57 limestone: $25-$35/ton. #8 limestone: $30-$45/ton. Crusher run limestone: $20-$30/ton. Delivery adds $50-$100. Order 10+ tons for best per-ton pricing.
How is limestone different from gravel?
Limestone is a specific rock type (sedimentary, calcium carbonate) that is crushed for construction. It compacts better than rounded gravel and provides a more stable base. Limestone is typically white/gray and may produce dust. It is slightly heavier than standard gravel (~160 lb/ft³ vs 145 lb/ft³).
